Q:
My 7 year old daughter does not converse well with friends, how can I help her?
I have been noticing that whenever my daughter is around her friends she doesn't participate in conversations with them and spends more time watching what everyone is doing. She plays well with the girls & she is on a few sports teams, but when the girls are all talking, she stands by & observes but does not participate or initiate conversation. She is an only child and does not have any close cousins, so I am sure this is part of the issue.
She does have playdates & her teachers give us good reports. I have tried talking to her & I try to give her suggestions for conversation starters, but she gets upset & seems to tune me out. I'm afraid as she gets older this can lead to more serious issues. What can I do to help her become more social considering her circumstances.
Note: I have also suggested cheerleading, dance or acting classes, but she only likes sports.
Thank you, Lisa
