What the Expert Says:

We are very sorry to hear about this situation. Please consider contacting your state's Adult Protective Services for options and how to find help for both the 38 year old man with Down Syndrome, as well as for his mother. You should be able to find your local APS by calling the United Way, which is simply by dialing 211 on your phone. If 211 is not available in your area, you can try looking in your phone book. Usually Child and Adult Protective Services are located in the front community pages.

There may be a Down Syndrome support group in your area which also may be of assistance.  You may be able to locate them in your phone book or by searching on the Internet.

There may be local crisis lines which could also help them, but we would need to know their city and state.  You can try calling the National Hopeline at: (800) 442-4673. Their counselors are available 24 hours, 7 days a week to help people in crisis. They can also locate services for the mother and her son in their city and state.

Thanks for reaching out and trying to find help for these individuals. We hope they will be able to get the guidance and support they need.
Take care and best wishes to you.

Sincerely,
Cynthia, Counselor
