Not sure the other person answering learned how to spell Kindergarten while in school............sorry LOL.
I've taught Kindergarten for 18 years.  My students come in knowing a lot when they arrive. It is helpful if a child knows:
*Capital ABC's
*numbers 1-10
*counting 1-10
*how to sit in a circle and listen to a story
*how to be in a classroom setting (pre-school is a must)
*is able to share with others
*feel comfortable without mom or dad around
*can listen and follow directions
*child should be 5 when starting

Kindergarten classes are way more academic than they used to be.
At the end of the year children are expected to do a lot, in order to go to first grade.
