What the Expert Says:

There are numerous issues impacting educational leaders- here are a few from my perspective:

*  Attracting and retaining high quality teachers. With the exception of a few states, the need for attracting and retaining teachers is huge.  There are simply not enough teachers being prepared and/or staying in the classroom and thus a shortage exists in many places, especially math/science.  Without well-qualified teachers in large numbers, we are going to be facing a crisis.

*  The standards and assessment trend- we hear a lot about Common Core but little about how to assess Common Core.  The key will be whether or not states will develop more thorough, balanced and knowledgeable assessments in the future vs. the current multiple-choice format that is easy to pay for.  Higher standards and solely multiple choice tests- something has got to give.

*  Principal Quality- finding a high school principal in many places is all but impossible because educators are becoming more and more adverse to how hard the job is- time, discipline, etc.  The need for exceptional principals is critical and the development of these exceptional people is a trend to watch.
