Not too difficult to imagine. You need a perpetual (not seasonal) stream with an adequate ft3/m flow. The slope of watershed in important to give the water enough weight to push the electrical generator. You need suitable bedrock conditions in which the stream will not undercut the dam. The site should not be so remote that transmission lines will be too costly to install and maintain. That should get you thinking at least.
