Q:

To early to diagnose dyslexia??

My daughter is in first grade and having extreme difficulty with reading and letters. I've suspected since preschool that she might have dyslexia. Her teacher advised me this week she is failing reading, I asked her about the possibility of dyslexia and how to go about treating it. She told me its to early to diagnose her at this age, so how could it be to early to diagnose when they are expected to read alone by the end of 1st Grade?? I'm at my wits end with this, please if anyone can help, I'm lost!

What the Expert Says:

Hello,

So sorry to hear about your child's challenges. Consider asking (in writing) for a team meeting to discuss if your daughter can be evaluated for learning disabilities. This is a legal process and you can learn about it here: http://www.nasponline.org/families/index.aspx  (look under Home and School tab for several documents which may help you.)

Also, here is another link for assistance, if you wish to peruse :http://www.ncld.org/parents-child-disabilities/ld-rights

Good luck!
