Q:

What are your favorite songs for teaching or encouraging healthy eating?

As one way to celebrate National Nutrition Month (in March), I'd like to learn, sing and enjoy songs about healthy eating with my second grader and her friends. What are your favorites? If you have links to the online videos or MP3s of the songs, please share those too! Thanks!

The best way to encourage kids to eat well is to have fun with food. Funny songs can help. One of my sons was a very picky eater growing up, and we had to find ways to bring humor to the situation. A few great songs come to mind:

Justin Roberts' "Airplane of Food" - Big brother has trouble getting baby brother to eat his food - http://www.totlol.com/watch/6piTKuO_7q0/Justin-Roberts---Airplane-Of-Food/0/

Earthworm Ensemble's "Pizza Moon" - In this song, a Dad and son make a pizza together. http://web.me.com/earthwormensemble/earthwormensemble/Our_Music.html

Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer's Grammy Award winning CD "Bon Appetit: Musical Food Fun" is chock full of entertaining songs about food and health: http://www.cathymarcy.com/store/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=22&category_id=6&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1

Charity and the JAMband's song "Pancakes" will get you and the kids in the kitchen mixing up something great: http://www.jamjamjam.com

For older kids, try Bill Harley's wry "There's a Pea on My Plate:" http://www.billharley.com/lyrics.asp?SongID=491

Over the weekend, I came across a 1979 album, The Corner Grocery Store by Raffi with Ken Whiteley. The title song, "The Corner Grocery Store" is particularly relevant to encouraging healthy eating among young children.

Sample lyrics:

"...There were plums, plums, twiddling their thumbs..."
"...There were beans, beans, trying on some jeans..."

Complete lyrics hyperlinked below, along with audio of the song on You Tube.

Enjoy!
