My girlfriends 7yr boy is not listening in school or at home

Talks back, calls himself stupid, hits himself and has said he wishes that he was dead. We have tried everything from rewards for the positive behavior to punishments for the bad. Nothing seems to be helping. What can we do to help?

Behaviors that you describe are a call for help. Your girlfriend's son might be depressed. He should be evaluated by a pediatric therapist as soon as possible. The boy's regular health care provider will be able to give a recommendation to his mom of who to see.
