Q:

What are some good daycares and apartments in Austin, TX?

I'm supposed to be moving to Texas soon. Are there any moms in Austin who send their kids to La Petite Academy or maybe know of a cheaper daycare whose quality matches La Petite? We will be living in either Killeen or Austin. Information about good apartments will also be VERY useful.

Hi, I'm not from the Austin, Texas area, but do have some resources I can suggest to help you along in your search.

You didn't mention the ages of your children, but if any are preschool age, there's a moms group in Austin, Texas you could contact to get their insights on local childcare options: http://www.austinmothers.org/index.htm

Here are many other local parent groups that may be helpful to get to know: http://www.newcomersclub.com/Texas/HillCountry.html

You can also use Care.com to find local childcare providers. This weekend (3/19 - 3/21), they're offering free access to care provider profiles: http://www.education.com/blog/kellysfinn/2010/03/free-access-local-caregivers-babysitters-tutors/

In finding apartments, I've had success with Craigslist in several different cities over the past 10 years. Here's their site for Austin, Texas: http://austin.craigslist.org/ Getting to know local parents through groups listed above, could help in narrowing the neighborhoods you look at.

For local schools, check out SchoolFinder, which includes community reviews: http://www.education.com/schoolfinder

Good luck -- I hope all goes well with your move!
