What the Expert Says:

There are several types of graphs and the right kind to use depends upon what has been measured. For example, if your son has counted the different plant species in your lawn, his data could be displayed in a pie chart or bar graph. But if he has taken data, for example, on how far a ball rolls down a ramp when released from different heights, that data must be displayed on a line graph, the other two kinds are inappropriate. So, the kind of graph depends on the type of data. If he does a line graph, there will be a horizontal (x) axis and vertical (y) axis. The point where the two axes intersect is the origin, also identified as the point (0, 0). The data will be of two sorts, such as time elapsed and number of something. These variables will then be plotted, one on the x and one on the y axis. Hope that helps!
