How do you handle siblings in your family giving each other birthday gifts?

My sons are two years apart (now 5 & 7). To date, we've always had them give each other a birthday present which we buy. I wonder if at some point they should be buying these gifts themselves using their own allowance money.

How do you handle this in your family? Do you buy gifts for your kids to give each other? Do you make your kids pay? Do you split the cost?

Would love any ideas!

Hi Kat,

In my family we split the costs. It started off small (parents would pay $20 and they would chip in $5) and got closer to a 50%-50% split as they got older. Once the kids got into their mid/late teens and knew what their siblings liked, they started buying gifts on their own.
