It's natural for a young child to feel anxious when their parents say goodbye. Although it can be difficult, separation is a normal stage of development. With understanding and patience, separation anxiety can be relieved–and should fade as the child gets older and into their classroom routine. However, if anxieties intensify or are persistent enough to get in the way of school or other activities, the child may have separation anxiety disorder and may require professional treatment.

Arrange a "meet and greet" a few days before school starts so the students and parents can meet you and tour the classroom.  Show the kids where they will be sitting, their locker/cubby, where they'll keep their supplies, etc.  It really helps with first day jitters.  Also, take this opportunity to tell the parents to prepare their child for school.  Kids need to hear that mom/dad/babysitter will be coming back to pick them up at the end of the day.  Every year, at least one of my new Pre-K students thinks that they are never going to see their mom again.  Parents sometimes need to be told about the importance of properly preparing kids for school.
