Q:

How to rid the yard from mosquitoes without using pesticides?

We maintain a pesticide, chemical free yard, but today when the kids were hunting Easter eggs, we noticed that the yard was full of mosquitoes just flying low to the ground.  Is there a way to remove them without using chemicals?

Thanks for any help and advice you can offer!

What the Expert Says:

You have waited a long time for an answer and by now may have figured it out from other sources. Biological larvicide control is available. Mosquito Bits and Mosquito Dunks contain Bacillus thuringiensis bacteria that feed on mosquito larvae. They can be used anywhere that you find standing water including flower pots, roof gutters, old tires, and ponds. Unfortunately, if the larvae have already hatched and you have adults looking to feed on you, your only recourse is only insect repellant. The most effective ones use DEET.

Hi,

Hope you had a nice Easter and weren't badly bitten by those pesky mosquitoes. While I don't know how to get rid of them, I found some sites that may be able to help you out. I'm planning on trying them out for a camping trip as well. Let me know if any of these work for you.

Hi, My first thought here was to consider natural predators (also known as "biocontrol"). Here are two articles I found that suggest several options that may be of help to you:

http://www.mosquito-netting.com/predators.html
http://www.wbrcouncil.org/CatSubCat/CatSubCatdisplay.asp?p9=CSC1&p1=136&p7=36

This wikipedia overview also suggests that you find and remove the source (or breeding conditions), and suggests non-toxic traps as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosquito_control

Good luck! May your yard be mosquito-free soon (if it isn't already).
