Hey, mine was "in love" for the first time at four, and she broke his heart!

Realize that it isn't sexual at this age and that he needs to understand that he can't base his happiness on his popularity--with anyone.  If she doesn't like him, then they wouldn't be good friends, anyway, right?  Help him get over it without freaking out.

Thank you, we were ready to start a psychology session when he said to me one night while doing homework that a boy in an after school club was harassing him.  I didn't understand how this was related to the school girl crush until I read how when a child is being bullied they will look for reassurance or approval somewhere else.  This must have been his way of dealing with it.  I am glad he told me what was going on.  I handled the issue through the school and all is well again.  Kids are so hard to read.  I never would have guessed it was anything close to that.  He still likes the girl but we also discussed that at this point in his life being friends is the goal to work towards. It's been a strange few months.
