What the Expert Says:

Dear Soujanyakandrika,

You might want to start with some of the suggestions in our article below on Starting the School Day with Special Time. Set the alarm fifteen minutes early. Five minutes is for you to enjoy the quiet of the morning before the stampede begins. Ten minutes is for pajama-clad Special Time before anybody has to rush anywhere. First thing in the morning can be a wonderfully effective time to connect with children, especially children going to school where they won't get to see you all day.

If your son is emotionally connected, his brain will be in a much better space for learning and for trying things that might take him extra time and be a challenge. This will reduce his stress level and increase his confidence over time as well.

Good luck! And let us know how it goes,

Rather than a psychiatrist it sounds as if your son may just need a tutor. Children can have undiagnosed learning differences that make writing hard. There are good voice dictation programs now such as dragon speaking - it's a free app. Your son may be reluctant to try to write at school because he writes slowly - does the teacher give him extra time for his writing at school or does she shorten his assignments?

Writing for 4 year old boys is difficult as their fine motor skills are so immature.  However, there may be other issues such as remembering the name of the letters, knowing how to write each of them, attaching the name of the letter to the image of the letter.  Rather than a psychiatrist, can you take him to someone to evaluate  his learning strengths and weaknesses: a diagnostician, speech and language therapist, psychologist.  Your school should have names of these professionals.
