There are many causes.  Students comes with very different levels of readiness. Some students have been exposed to pre-readiness skills for several years either at home and/or preschool, others come with no pre-skills. Every child has had different experiences that do or do not help them be ready for formal learning.  Most importantly, children mature at different rates, and children must be physically, emotionally, and cognitively ready before they can benefit from formal learning experiences.
