Q:

Can I get the swine flu vaccine while on Tamiflu?

Our 6 year old had Swine flu last week.  My husband and I were treated with Tamiflu because we also have a 2 month old baby to whom we are the primary caregivers.  Our city is running an H1N1 vaccine clinic this Friday and we would like to get ourselves and our 4 year old son vaccinated.  Will the shot be effective while on Tamiflu?  We will be on day 7 of a ten day treatment at that time.

What the Expert Says:

The use of antiviral medicine and the vaccine has not been studied when used together according to its manufacturer.  The recommendation is to not administer the nasal vaccine until 48 hours after stopping the Tamiflu.  Tamiflu should not be administered until two weeks after receiving the vaccine.
