Hand & Wrist
| Indicators: | The carpal tunnel is found along the palm-side region of the wrist. The median nerve and various finger tendons travel through a limited space formed by several small wrist bones (carpal bones). Carpal tunnel syndrome usually occurs from repeated wrist flexion - bending the wrist forward - resulting in inflammation of the tendons and their sheath coverings within the tunnel. The inflammation leads to a compression of the median nerve, which results in tingling and numbness of the thumb, index and middle fingers, and palm of the hand. Weakness of thumb movement is also present. Tapping over the tunnel sometimes causes tingling and numbness. |
| Treatment: | Rest, along with wrist immobilization (wrist brace) and anti-inflammatory medication is the first line of treatment. After inflammation is reduced, wrist extension stretching exercises and strengthening exercises is recommended. |
