Electrical Safety Checklist
Use the following checklist as aguide to help keep your family safefrom electrical dangers at home.
Electrical Safety Checklist
___ Are electrical appliances, cords and fixtures in your home listed by an independent testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL)?
___ Are wet areas in your home, such as the kitchen and bathrooms, protected by ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs)?
___ Do you push the test button on your GFCIs monthly to determine that they are operating properly?
___ Do you use the safe light bulb wattage for each light fixture?
___ Do you keep electrical cords out of traffic areas?
___ Are all cords in good condition and not knotted or coiled or pinched under furniture or rugs?
___ Are you careful not to leave faceplates off of outlets or switches?
___ Are all electrically-powered appliances and equipment dry and kept away from places where water is used?
___ Are portable space heaters used away from combustibles such as curtains or stacks of newspapers?
___ Are counter top electrical appliances located away from the sink, and their cords away from hot surfaces?
___ Do you remember to unplug all counter top appliances when not in use?
___ Are the range top and the areas above it free from things that can burn, including towels, potholders, and plastic
utensils?
___ Are small electrical appliances such as hair dryers, curling irons, and razors kept away from water and unplugged and
stored when not in use?
___ Are electric blankets in good working order and unplugged when not in use?
___ If fuses are used, are they the correct size for the circuits they protect?
___ Are all power tools equipped with 3-prong plugs or marked to indicate that they are double insulated?
___ Do outdoor outlets have waterproof covers that close automatically?
___ Are extension cords used outside specifically marked for such outdoor use?
___ Are you careful not to run power cords across floors where they can be tripped over?
___ Are you careful not to overload electrical outlets, extension cords and power strips?
