Frequently Asked Questions about the WASL (continued)
Topics: Middle Years (5-9), Washington, State Tests, more...
21. How do students who are English Language Learners (ELL) participate in the WASL tests?
All students who are ELL must participate in all WASL tests scheduled for their grades regardless of the number of years they have been in the U.S. The only exception is students who are in their first year of enrollment in U.S. schools. These students are not required to participate in reading or writing tests, but they must take the math exam. In addition to participating in WASL, ELL students must take annually the Washington Language Proficiency Test - II (WLPT-II) in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
22. Do private-school students or home-schooled students have to take the WASL?
No, private-school and home-schooled students are exempt from the WASL. Some private and home-schooled students, however, do choose to take the exam. Home-schooled students who want a diploma from a Washington public high school diploma must earn a Certificate of Academic Achievement or Certificate of Individual Achievement, and complete all other state and local graduation requirements.
