For Gifted Students To Pursue Out-of-School Activities

Many state associations for the gifted and other organizations attuned to the needs of gifted students offer scholarship money for students to pursue an out-of-school activity in an area of interest. Several such scholarships are listed below by state. Families are encouraged to check with their state department of education, area educational organizations, and any other clubs and organizations with which family members are affiliated for additional opportunities.

National

The Davidson Institute For Talent Development

The Davidson Institute for Talent Development offers high achieving young people across the country the opportunity to be named a Davidson Fellows. Individuals named as Davidson Fellows receive a $50,000, $25,000 or $10,000 scholarship in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the areas of science, technology, mathematics, music, literature and/or philosophy. Each submission must be an original piece of work recognized by experts in the field as "significant" and it must have the potential to make a positive contribution to society. To be eligible, applicants must be under the age of 18, and a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident. The scholarship must be used at an accredited institute of learning. Nicholas Green Award for Students

The Nicholas Green Awards are presented by the National Association for Gifted Children and are designed to recognize excellence in young children. The awards, which include a $500 U.S. Savings Bond, may be made to students in grades 3-6 who have distinguished themselves in academics, leadership, or the arts. Nominations will be accepted from the students themselves, parents, teachers, peers, and community and civic groups. Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Program

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars program selects high-achieving youth with financial need and provides them with individualized educational services throughout high school that will enable them to develop their talents and abilities. The Young Scholars Program is one of the most individualized scholarships offered in the United States. The Foundation collaborates with regional talent centers at Duke, Johns Hopkins, and Northwestern Universities, and the University of Denver to answer inquiries about the program, administer the application process, and counsel Young Scholars. However, applicants need not be part of the talent centers' programs to be eligible for or participate in the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Program. The Caroline D. Bradley Scholarship

The Caroline D. Bradley Scholarship identifies exceptionally gifted middle school students who have demonstrated academic and personal excellence and awards them with a scholarship to the high school that best meets their academic and personal needs. Scholars receive a full, four-year scholarship covering the cost of tuition and books, as well as guidance in choosing an appropriate high school. The scholars become part of a peer network that provides them with the opportunity to communicate with and develop lifelong relationships with other motivated young people. To apply, a student must have achieved a score of 97% or higher in at least one of the major academic areas on a school administered nationally normed standardized test (such as Stanford 9, Iowa Test of Basic Skills) for at least the past two years. Applicants must also score as well as or better than the average college bound senior on the SAT-I reasoning test. Recommendations, nomination, work sample, essays, transcripts and other elements are also required. Eligible students must reside in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, DC, Washington State, or Wisconsin. QuestBridge College Prep Scholarship for High School Juniors

The QuestBridge College Prep Scholarship is designed to level the playing field of college admissions by equipping high-achieving low-income students to apply successfully to leading schools. If you are a high school junior who has achieved excellent academic results in the face of economic challenges, we encourage you to apply for the College Prep Scholarship. Each award will include one or more of the following: Full scholarships to selective college summer programs; college admissions counseling; and/or college preparatory conferences. College Prep Scholarship applicants will also gain a head start on applying to the fall 2007 QuestBridge College Match program, which pairs high-achieving low-income high school seniors with admission and full four-year scholarships to QuestBridge partner colleges. The application will be available on the QuestBridge Web site (www.questbridge.org) starting on March 1, and will be due on March 31. The application and awards are free of charge.

Arkansas

Arkansans for Gifted and Talented Education (AGATE) Youth Challenger Award

The purpose of this award is to honor and recognize a student in grades 7-12 who risked taking an unusual (creative, different, innovative) step in a direction most people would probably not even think of or consider. California

California Association for the Gifted (CAG) Student Grants

CAG’s Student Grant is intended to assist you, as a gifted student, to excel in an area of interest or achievement. Grants are typically awarded to help finance: an original project which holds promise for the advancement of learning or contributes to a field of endeavor, or an instructional opportunity not available within a student’s school district. Individual grants will be awarded in amounts up to $500. To be eligible, students must be currently enrolled in a gifted and talented program in California and will continue to participate in it for the duration of the intended project or instructional opportunity. Illinois

The Carol Morreale 2006 Scholarship

This $1000 award was established in memory of Carol Morreale, an educator, early member, and tireless advocate for gifted children. Funded through memorial donations, this scholarship was created to recognize excellence in children. The award will be given to a student in grades 1 through 8 who has demonstrated excellence in language arts or math. Financial need will also be a consideration. Kansas

Future Astronaut Training Program Scholarships

The Kansas Association for the Gifted, Talented and Creative (KGTC) will sponsor two scholarships for Level I for the Future Astronauts Training Program.  KGTC will pay tuition/registration which includes room, board, model rocket, t-shirt, group photo, and all written materials. Level I scholarships are available to any Kansas student finishing sixth, seventh, or eighth grade during the current school year. The winning students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson. They will also be asked to share their experiences at the KGTC Annual Convention. Kentucky

Kentucky Association for Gifted Education (KAGE) Foundation Scholarships

The KAGE Foundation provides scholarship assistance to qualified elementary and secondary students throughout Kentucky who, because of financial need, would otherwise be discouraged from participating in the summer gifted programs offered by Kentucky's public universities. These programs provide highly capable students with curricula different from that in most regular classrooms and, most importantly, offer opportunities for such students to work with their intellectual peers. Mississippi

Mississippi Association for Gifted Children (MAGC) Scholarships for Students

MAGC awards at least one student scholarship annually for use at a Mississippi summer program for gifted students. This scholarship is provided to students who would not be able to otherwise attend summer programs due to financial considerations. The nomination must be submitted by the student’s teacher. Nebraska

The Nebraska Association for the Gifted Preschool-Grade 11 Scholarships

The Nebraska Association For The Gifted will be awarding scholarship(s) of up to $250 for students in preschool through Grade 11. Scholarships are awarded to students to encourage them to take advantage of educational opportunities. North Carolina

North Carolina Association for the Gifted and Talented (NCAGT) Student Scholarships

NCAGT's Student Scholarships are intended to assist North Carolina's gifted students, K-12, to excel in an area of interest or achievement. Scholarship funds are awarded to help finance an original project which holds promise for the advancement of learning or contributes to some field of endeavor, or an instructional opportunity not available within a student's local school system. Individual scholarships will be awarded in amounts up to $250. Any student is eligible, grades K-12, who currently qualifies as academically and/or intellectually gifted according to state or locally defined guidelines, and whose application is sponsored by a current member of NCAGT/PAGE. Ohio

Ohio Association for Gifted Children (OAGC) Scholarship Award

Twice each year OAGC offers scholarships to K-12 Ohio students for special activities that extend their special talent/interest areas. Nominations of scholarship candidates must be made by a current OAGC member. Awards of up to 75% of the cost of the program with a maximum award of $500 per student per year will be observed. Exceptional circumstances will be considered by the review committee. An effort will be made to award a majority of the applicants to some extent, rather than making a few large awards to a small number of applicants. Support for Talented Students

STS is a tax-exempt, tax deductible foundation whose sole purpose is to provide scholarships to financially needy gifted and talented Ohio students in grades 1-12. Scholarships are made available for students who would benefit from enrichment activities not normally provided in schools. STS does not discriminate on the basis of gender, religious preference, race, or country of national origin. Some examples of activities that have been previously funded are math/computer courses, art and music instructional programs, science and engineering camps, and special academic summer programs. South Carolina

The Melba McKenzie Scholarship

The South Carolina Consortium for Gifted Education has established a scholarship in Melba McKenzie’s memory. Melba was the coordinator/teacher for gifted students in Hampton 2 (Estill) and a vocal advocate for gifted education. The scholarship provides up to $750 for a gifted student, currently in grades 6-8, to attend a summer program for academically gifted students. For information visit www.scgifted.org/index.html.

Tennessee

Tennessee Association for the Gifted (TAG) Student Scholarships
