What are the Georgia Department of Education Performance Standards?

Performance standards provide clear expectations for assessment, instruction, and student work. They define the level of work that demonstrates achievement of the standards, enabling a teacher to know “how good is good enough.” The performance standards isolate and identify the skills needed to use the knowledge and skills to problem-solve, reason, communicate, and make connections with other information. Performance standards also tell the teacher how to assess the extent to which the student knows the material or can manipulate and apply the information.

Example of a Performance Standard: 1st Grade Mathematics

All students will be actively engaged in developing mathematical understandings in real and relevant contexts. By the end of 1st Grade, students will be able to:

  • Understand and use the concept of ones and tens in the place value number system.

I am a highly upset parent here in Paulding County. My daughter is not being allowed to march with her graduating class, not because she has failed her normal subjects, but because of one part of the GHST. The part what makes me upset is that when I called the state education office to complain, they say they don't have anything to do with the way each county handles that, but it's strange that the state is the one who chose to use this method. All states don't use this type of testing to determine a child's learning. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like this is one of the 'pass the buck' situations. This is dealing with our future children's self-esteem and all we can do is make statements like "I can't help you in that department". My daughter has enough credits and have passed her other requirements but is told, Paulding County don't allow this. I went to the board and explained to them that the other surrounding counties allow the student to march but they would have to retake the test,  and was told that they did not allow this because some folks complained that it was not fair to allow this. Well, now me and some other folks are complaining that our children are being singled out as failures and they are not! Some people don't test well and our state / country, is allowing this testing issues to determine our children's destiny; but we want to know what's happening to the moral of our children. Well, we need to take a long hard look at "Are we failing our children?" >>>>>>>YES!
