Turf Toe

Indicators: Turf toe is basically a sprain to the big (great) toe. Often times the toe gets bent sharply backwards if an athlete is wearing too flexible of a shoe. For example, while making a cut on the playing field, the shoe gets caught in the turf and the big toe hyperextends inside the shoe. Playing on artificial surfaces often contributes to this type of injury.
Treatment: As with any sprain, R.I.C.E should be followed to help with pain and swelling that occurs in the joint. X-rays may be warranted to rule out a fracture. Stiffer-soled shoes help prevent this injury, and usually a stiff shoe insert or taping the big toe helps restrict the toe’s motion once an injury does occur. Rehabilitation exercises include picking up a variety of objects with the toes, gathering a towel placed on the floor or gripping and spreading the toes.
