Violent Teens

These teens have serious personal problems. Signs to watch for are:

• isolation and withdrawal signifying the loss of a healthy balance in life
• a history of aggressive behavior toward other children or animals
• the use of alcohol or drugs, which reduces inhibition
• a negative peer group that could influence him to try something
• no solid connection to positive adults who can provide guidance

What can parents do when their child is being threatened?

Don’t ignore it. But don’t over-react. Listen carefully to your child. Get as much information as you can about the child who made the threat. Listen to your child’s conversations with his or her friends to see if they are concerned.

How can you tell if this is a serious threat?

Every threat is serious these days. Know your kids. Be able to tell if their concerns are valid. If you have asked all the questions and you are still concerned, then it is serious. Get professional help – FAST. Call a counselor, a school official, your clergy or the police.

What if you suspect that your own child is the one that might cause harm to others?

Again, know your own kid. Make sure you stay connected with his feelings. Be realistic -- What is your child’s history? Is she aggressive toward others? Has he harmed animals in the past? Who influences your teen? How?

Does your teen have access to weapons? Does he know how to use them? Do you think he has a plan? If you are concerned, ASK FOR HELP. Don’t let too much time pass because you don’t want to believe it is possible.
