Despite ambivalence regarding various issues related to school safety, the fact remains that most schools in the United States are reasonably safe and orderly places. This is not a coincidence. The decline in school violence and criminal activity in recent years is the result of the mobilization of public concern, the allocation of resources for school safety, the commitment of educators, and the creation of a knowledge base regarding school safety. Educators have clarified expectations for student behavior, developed comprehensive school safety plans, and obtained sophisticated training related to conflict and crisis management. Students, parents, and communities have been enlisted in the campaign for safe schools. That concerned citizens and conscientious educators can make a positive difference regarding the safety and well-being of young people is the most important lesson that we have learned.

What we do to create and maintain safe learning environments for young people today will determine, to a great extent, the quality of our society tomorrow.
