You may simply decide that studying abroad is not for you. And yet, you nevertheless may still want to spend a semester or year away from your home university. It can be done without packing up and going overseas!

You can choose to stay in your home country and go away to attend another college or university here. This alternative is actually a great idea. You still get to experience something new and different but without some of the hassle involved with going abroad. Two benefits that immediately come to mind are:

  • You won't have to function in a language that isn't your own.
  • You probably will have an easy time finding courses equivalent to the ones you're taking at your home university to fulfill core and major requirements.

Okay, so you still need to do your homework and investigate whether your college has exchange programs with other colleges in the U.S., but if your school already has established exchanges with other schools, usually the application/acceptance process and credit transfer is fairly smooth.

When your school hasn't set up exchanges with any U.S. schools, you need to visit your dean or adviser to determine whether they recommend studying at particular schools. Your college may enable you to choose any college/university you like and submit your plans for approval the semester before going away.

Whenever you choose to study at another school in your home country, many of the same rules and processes discussed in this book apply to you, too! Your host university requires you to submit an application, and your home university requires you to submit paperwork and plan out your course of study while away. You also need to worry about transferring course credit.
