Devising an Appropriate Discipline Plan

Devising an Appropriate Discipline Plan
Parent Inspiration
What are your discipline goals? The first step is to figure out the cause of your child’s behavior.

What You Need to Know

In choosing a plan for discipline, both teachers and parents should ensure that it will not damage growth in self-esteem. A discipline plan needs to address the causes of the problem, not the problem behavior.

  • Parents and teachers need to remember that certain behaviors are age appropriate.
  • It’s possible that inappropriate adult expectations could have created the problem. We shouldn’t have the same expectations of all children.
  • The environment can also be the reason children are acting in a negative way.
  • Children may have a lack of skills in communicating and dealing with their emotions.
  • Sometimes the problem is that children do not understand how they are supposed to behave in a situation.

How You Can Help

  • Help your children by teaching them vocabulary that helps them express their feelings. A good way to do this is to read books that introduce or reinforce feelings and emotions.
  • Be a positive role model. Speak and act as you expect your child to speak and act. Children can learn the wrong way to do something by observing those they trust doing it the wrong way. To correct this, they need to see parents and teachers doing it the right way.
