Math for Praxis II ParaPro Test Prep Practice Problems

There will be about 12 questions on the ParaPro Assessment that test your ability to apply all of the math skills covered earlier in this chapter toward classroom instruction. That means that the questions will either be related to the classroom or will be connected in some way to the instruction of these skills for students.

### Classroom Context

There will be some questions on the math section of the ParaPro Assessment that apply to the classroom. Sometimes these problems will be straightforward, and have only a basic connection to a classroom. Other times these problems will be more complicated, with several steps necessary. The following two questions are examples of these types of problems.

Examples

1. A fish tank in a classroom has a capacity of 32 quarts. How many gallons does the fish tank hold?
1. 2
2. 4
3. 8
4. 16
2. To solve this problem, you need to convert from a smaller unit, quarts, to a larger unit, gallons. That means you need to use division. There are 4 quarts in 1 gallon, so you need to divide by 4.

32 quarts ÷ 4 quarts per gallon = 8 gallons

The fish tank holds 8 gallons. The correct answer choice would be c.

For the next example, a teacher assigns a different number of pages to be read in a book each day. The table below shows the number per day.

3. What is the mean (average) number of pages that the teacher assigns per day during the week?
1. 10
2. 12
3. 15
4. 60
4. To solve this problem, you need to find the average number in the data set for Monday through Friday. To find the mean requires you to add all of the values in the data set, then divide by the total number of values.

The mean, or average, of the set is 12. The teacher assigned an average of 12 pages per day during the week. The correct answer choice would be b.

### Instructional Context

As a professional educator, you will often be asked to help students in the classroom. The instructional questions on the ParaPro Assessment will ensure that you have the ability to help students improve their math skills. You may be asked to show that you know the proper steps to solve a problem, or help a student identify why he or she solved a problem incorrectly.

Examples

1. A student has 3 notebooks, each of which has 80 pieces of paper. The student also has 2 packs of printer paper, each of which has 200 pieces of paper. The student wants to figure out how many pieces of paper he has in total. Which expression can the student use to find the answer?
1. 3(80 + 200)
2. 2(80) + 3(200)
3. (3 + 2)(80 + 200)
4. 3(80) + 2(200)
2. To solve this problem, you would need to choose the expression that would result in the correct answer. Each notebook has 80 pieces of paper. There are 3 notebooks. Therefore, 80 needs to be multiplied by 3. Each pack has 200 pieces of paper. There are 2 packs of paper. Therefore, 200 needs to be multiplied by 2. The products of each multiplication then need to be added together. The expression in answer choice d correctly demonstrates these steps.

3. A student was asked to solve the following equation:
4. 4 + 12 ÷ 2

The student adds 12 to 4 to get 16 and then divides 16 by 2 to get 8. The student's final answer was 8.What did the student do incorrectly?

1. The student should have divided 12 by 2 before adding 4 to the quotient.
2. The student incorrectly found the sum of 12 and 4.
3. The student should have divided 4 by 2 before adding 12 to the quotient.
4. The student incorrectly found the quotient of 16 and 2.

To solve this problem, you need to identify the student's mistake in the solution. The student did not correctly follow the order of operations, which states that multiplication and division should always be performed before addition and subtraction. Therefore, 12 should have been divided by 2 before any addition was performed. The statement in answer choice a is correct.
