Developmental Challenges, What Do Parents Need From the Educational System
The closest literature relevant to this question is from parents of children identified with emotional and behavioral problems (Petr & Allen, 1997). The primary perception of these parents was that the services they had received were not family centered. They wanted to be involved in decision making and specifically to have access to information about their child and about their rights as parents. Their top five concerns were the following:
- Failure of providers to get them assistance from other agencies
- Lack of help in tapping their own family strengths and resources
- Failure to provide adequate information to the family
- Failure to inform them of their rights
- Lack of respect for parents’ decision-making responsibilities
