Eight-Year-Olds

Marissa is beginning to look more adult-like in her physical appearance. Her body proportions are subtly changing in preparation for the more dramatic changes of puberty just ahead. Marissa’s movements are now quite fluid and graceful, and she uses good posture when seated. She is in general healthier and less easily fatigued than she was as a 7-year-old.

Marissa is very aware of the differences between herself and the boys in her class, and she works hard to separate herself from “those geeks.” Her friends are all girls, and she likes it that way. Her group of friends is becoming more exclusive, and it is difficult for them to add new members. Although closeness with her parents at home is still important to her, Marissa is beginning to separate herself from her teacher and finds this relationship less important than it was a year ago.

Marissa’s hungry mind is eager to know more information about her expanding world. In addition to her desire to know more about people and relationships in her family and neighborhood, Marissa can conceptualize nations around the world and is curious about life there. She has an Internet pen pal in Australia and enjoys learning about school and family life there. Marissa is beginning to show an interest in historical events and can conceptualize and discuss future events.
