Below is an example of a favorite class short-answer college application essay.

It was the beginning of February, spring was a long way off, and I was fifteen and in a teenage slump. In the past art history classes had been something for me to try to stay awake through. I was mildly interested sometimes, but most of the time I had to struggle to keep my eyes open when the lights went out for the slides. But Dr. Elgar’s ninth grade art history class was magical. Because of her teaching, two dimensional slide projections became four dimensional stories with real people in them. Her style was matter-of-fact but contained intense enthusiasm and love for the subject. It was as if she had just come in from having lunch with Carravaggio. I was no longer counting the minutes until the end of class but instead trying to get the seat closest to the front so I could find all the hidden symbolism in David’s “The Death of Marat.” At the end of her classes I felt invigorated and eager to learn more, and I even found myself reading more than the assigned material. For my final project in the course I wrote a comparative paper about Degas’ “The Dance Class,” and Homer’s “Bathers” that I actually enjoyed writing. I do not remember all the stories Dr. Elgar told, but I do remember how to study and appreciate art history.
