Belos is an example of a very general college admission essay.

When I took European history, I learned a lot about the politics and history of the continent. The teacher often gave us photocopied notes, which were very useful when it came time to write papers. We had to write many long papers, but the hardest thing we had to do was to present our information to the class. On presentation days we had to give out notes that we had prepared and discuss the material with the other students.

The assignments for that class were always hard; I have read a lot of difficult books in my other courses, but in this class we had to talk and write about what we were reading, not just listen to the teacher. When it was my turn to make a presentation, I was too busy to start early. I stayed up all night working on the material. When the class began, I distributed papers about my topic to the class. They read the papers as I explained my main points.

I did a lot of work not only because I care about my grades, but also because I wanted to learn about the topic. I wanted to impress the teacher and my classmates, and I did. The assignment turned out to be one of the best I have ever done because I learned more from it than from anything else I’ve ever done for school.
