There are seven common types of essay structures. These types include: chronological order, interrupted chronological order, survey, description and interpretation, comparison and contrast, pro and con, and cause and effect. Below is an example of a survey college admission essay.
When you look at this picture, you will probably think that I have sent it to you in order to illustrate my love of dental hygiene or color coordination, and while I assure you that dental hygiene is important to me, the picture has more personal significance than that. Each toothbrush in my bathroom belongs to one of my close friends. Whenever they sleep over, they have a toothbrush waiting for them. This is not only a pleasant change from the method of scrubbing toothpaste onto each tooth by finger, which experience has proved ineffective and unpleasant, but also a reminder of the importance of our lasting friendships. I am reminded of my friends each night before I go to sleep and each morning as soon as I wake up.
The friends whom we grow up with invariably shape who we become. Through examining aspects of what we like or admire about someone, we learn about ourselves. My group of friends illustrates my wide range or interests and my multi sided personality.
The red toothbrush represents my academic motivation and dedication, as it belongs to a friend with whom I have become closer with through school. We struggled through an honors physics class together last year, and continue to work together this year. We have spent hours mastering friction on an incline and graphing polynomial functions, and I know that I can always count on her to help me out with a math problem or to discuss more serious topics. Through our academic success together, I have avoided getting caught up in the competitive nature of my school, and learned that studying together is beneficial to both parties.
The turquoise toothbrush belongs to a particularly fun friend. With her, my fun loving side comes out. Together we have taken spur of the moment day trips to the beach, ventured to downtown New York in search of Mexican food with live music, and danced the night away during “80s night” at a club. Academics are important to me, but I have always left some time for fun and relaxation.
The rest of my friends have various qualities that make me enjoy my time spent with them and admire them for. Ranging from loyalty to a sense of humor to a love for the “Harry Potter” Series, each is important to me. I have learned so much from each person and cannot imagine my high school years without my friends. I am extremely lucky to have such a supportive and diverse group. We have done community service together, pulled all nighters studying, thrown each other surprise birthday parties, and most importantly, encouraged each other. Come next autumn, we will all be on our way to different places all over the country. Although I will miss my friends, I look forward to adding new and inspiring people to their numbers. I am excited to find things in common with those who have grown up in different environments, and discover new interests through meeting new people. In the coming year, the toothbrushes in my bathroom will not get much use, but the qualities that have attracted me to their owners will ensure that the friendships will last.
