Think: An Exercise to Develop Phonics Knowledge

by J.L. Shanker
Source: Pearson Allyn Bacon Prentice Hall
Topics: Elementary School, Reading Building Blocks, Phonics and Sound

Purpose:  To provide practice with  initial vowels, consonants, and initial consonant blends.  This game works well with four players.

Materials:  Enough small cards so that each letter of the alphabet  and each initial blend can be printed on a separate card. There may be more than one card for each vowel.

Procedure:

Place the cards face down on the table. Players take turns selecting a card and naming a word that begins with the same letter or blend. If someone cannot name a word within 5 seconds, he puts the card back. The winner is the person who has the greatest number of cards after the entire pile has been drawn.
