So many camps, so little time! Narrow your camp selections using these tips.
What You Need to Know
There are so many kinds of summer camps that it’s hard to keep track. Here are descriptions of some.
- Traditional. This is the type of camp that probably comes to mind first. They offer outdoor activities and arts and crafts.
- Specialty. Music or sports camps are specialty camps.
- Trip. Kids hike, bike, or canoe to a destination.
- Travel. Campers go to various places to tour.
- Family. Everyone gets to go to this camp, which may be ideal for younger kids who aren’t ready to stay away from home.
- Special needs. Children with medical or emotional needs find activities suited to them at these camps.
How You Can Help
- Ask yourself some probing questions about camp. A list is in the full article and includes things like the camper-to-counselor ratio, how many campers return from a previous year, and what the camp director’s background is. Answering these questions will help you check into a camp’s reputation, philosophy, and services.
- Get a scholarship for your camper. Camp can be expensive, but many camps offer financial aid. Giving your child an experience she’ll remember her whole life is worth it.
