Getting Back to Life: School

Source: Cure Search
Topics: Preparing Your Child for Back to School, Childhood Long Term Illness, Childhood Cancer and Tumors

As treatment ends and you prepare to go back to school:

  • You may feel like you’re in a different place academically than the rest of the class, and notice gaps in what you've learned because you weren’t always present in class.
  • You may also wonder how you can fill in the gaps and start working on all of the same new materials as your friends and classmates.

Here are some ideas to help you figure out what you need when getting back to school:

  • Through tutoring at home or in school while you were sick, you may not have covered all of the same materials as your friends and classmates, but it's likely you covered the same topics.
  • When you work with someone one-on-one, you can get a lot accomplished in less time than it would take in the classroom.
  • Extra tutoring at home or at school, as well as other strategies for helping you get back on track are available for as long as you need them.
  • Talking to your parents, teachers, and the medical team about things you are having trouble with will help them come up with a plan that will give you what you need in school.
  • Schools are used to helping students with special needs (including those who have been sick). Your parents can work with the school to set up the extra help you might need.
