At a young age a child develops an awareness of health, nutrition and safety. Preschoolers are just beginning to show growing independence in the areas of hygiene, nutrition and personal care.
Here are some widely held expectations that experts have for children 3-5 years of age.
- Child begins to dress, wash hands, brush teeth and do bathroom duty.
- Develops knowledge of what to do in case of fire, injury or other emergency.
- Identifies potential harmful objects or behaviors.
- Develops an understanding of the need for regular exercise and activity.
- Follows safety rules.
- Recognizes common signs of danger/warning.
- Uses good hand washing skills (after toileting, eating, wiping nose and handling animals)
