Third grader Prisilla is due at the recreation ground at 2:00 p.m. for soccer practice. Preparation for soccer includes collecting all the appropriate sports equipment, including boots, shinpads, water bottle, uniform, hairband, socks, and training bib. Ask Prisilla about any team commitments this week. She has to bring oranges for the entire team. Okay, you stop by the grocery store and pick up a few pounds of oranges.

It’s halfway through practice and Prisilla is getting bored. Another girl kicked her leg and the coach made her play in goal. She wants to go home. She kicks at the grass instead of concentrating on the game, and the other team scores easily. Parents should beware of becoming ‘bleacher dads’, yelling advice at their child. But this may be a moment when Prisilla needs encouragement to keep concentrating. Stay focused, then afterwards, she can go to the juicebar for a treat.

At the end of the game, Prisilla’s really pleased at the saves she made. She’s ready to leave – soccer’s over for this week. The juice is waiting and she’s thirsty. Wait a minute. What does she need to do? Finish the task. Collect her things, listen to the coach’s instructions, help clear up the cups and orange peel, and put the soccer balls into the bag. When she gets home, she has to clean her boots and put her dirty kit by the washing machine. Then she can relax, proud that she’s accomplished something by herself.
