Want to make sure your kids don't end up as social misfits? Five things you must teach them.
What You Need To Know
Kids of all ages need to feel a sense of belonging, and you can help them succeed by building positive social skills through what you teach and what you model. Five things you absolutely must teach them, starting today:
- to use common courtesies like "please and thank you"
- to extend kindness to others
- to respect other cultures and ways of life
- to stand up for what's right
- to be interested in the world and have hobbies that light you up
How You Can Help
Watch what you say around your kids. Gossiping and putting others down doesn't teach respect for others. Make sure you thank your kids for doing what you ask of them, and apologize when it's called for.
Be aware of how you act in public. Don't embarrass your child through your actions, please. (Getting sloshed at the baseball game is so not cool.)
If your kid plays on a team, show good sportsmanship. Cheer on your team, of course, but don't shout insults at the opposing side's players.
