Modeling Spelling Strategies
- Remembering how to spell irregular, high-frequency words (some, been, goes)
- Figuring out the spellings of words using onset and rime analogies (play-please, set-pet)
- Listening for sounds in words (splash, flag, united)
- Thinking about the appearance of the word (elephant, monkey)
- Building compound words (air-plane, mail-box)
- Using generalizations for adding prefixes and suffixes (re-cycle, content-ment)
- Applying knowledge of derivatives (astro- for astronaut, astronomy)
- Using homophones (beat, beet; their, there, they're)
- Using apostrophes (can't, won't, captain's)
