Ed became a mechanic largely because of his father. His father was always in the garage working on one car or another, so young Ed would spend hours watching his father work. As a result, he became fascinated by cars at an early age. His father encouraged him to learn about cars on his own, so Ed began tinkering with cars himself at age eight. Consequently, by the time he was 13, Ed could tear an engine apart and put it back together by himself. Because he was already so skilled, when he was 15 he got a job as the chief mechanic at a local repair shop. He has been there ever since.

Usted debería de haber subrayado las siguientes frases y palabras del párrafo anterior: because of, so (dos veces), as a result, consequently y since.

Note que el propósito de este párrafo—el explicar por qué Ed llegó a ser mecánico—aparece en la oración temática: "Ed became a mechanic largely because of his father."

The past week since I won the lottery has been hectic. Once the news came in, I decided to take Tuesday off from work. I might even quit my job—at least, I've considered it. Several talk shows have been trying to get me on the air, and of course all my family members have been calling to offer congratulations. A couple of my cousins asked to borrow some money, but you could say that just comes with the territory.
