Special Problems with Note-Taking and Possible Adaptations

Some students may experience great difficulties with note taking, in spite of attempts to teach all skills to make students successful. The table below lists some special problems that my be encountered by students when trying to take notes.

  • Provide basic outline as handout
  • Model outlining on blackboard
  • Use overhead transparencies during lectures
  • Copy overhead transparencies for students
Legibility
  • Show how illegibility can affect value of notes
  • Model "shorthand" and abbreviations
  • Provide a variety of paper and pens
Deciding what to write
  • Organize lecture logically
  • Write key points on board or overhead as you lecture
  • Provide guided notes as handouts for students
Deciding how to organize
  • Provide a note-taking format
  • Teach a particular note-taking strategy that suits your class
Learning how to use notes
  • Show how to review, correct, and elaborate on notes
  • Model how to use notes for studying
  • Schedule time for reviewing notes during class
