What You Need to Know

While 20% of college students reported cheating in the 1940s, 75-98% report cheating today – which presents us with a nation of rising cheaters who are ultimately more likely to lie on their resumes and cheat through their work days. 

More than anything, cheating is about fixed mindsets and perfectionism. Research shows that individuals with growth mindsets don't cheat and perform better in high school nevertheless. 

To discourage cheating, start young developing a growth-mindset in your child” 

• Make sure your kids know where you stand on cheating. Research shows that although children are born with the capacity to be moral, their environments still need to nurture and encourage these values. Discuss why cheating behaviors are self-defeating. 
• Make sure your own behavior models trustworthiness and honesty. Don't brag in front of your child about undeclared taxable income or talking your way out of a speeding ticket, which may teach your child that it's okay to cut corners to come out ahead. 

Research shows that students who believe extrinsic values like GPA and performance are valued more highly than intrinsic variables like learning and improvement are more likely to cheat. Foster your child's love of learning itself. Emphasize effort over performance. Give pats on the back for more than just good report cards, but also for efforts, for completing homework without prompting, and for showing gradual improvement.
