The School Psychologist

The school psychologist traditionally provides assessment and counseling to students and consultation to the classroom teacher. ID EA states that the school psychologist must be involved in the multidisciplinary decision making that determines the presence of a handicapping condition, but he or she does not need to actually conduct the assessment for a learning disability. The school psychologist's knowledge of normal child development, handicapping conditions, and the attributes of the school environment that affect learning and behavior can be very helpful to the academic and social development of students with LD.

The Vocational Educator

For students with LD who choose not to pursue postsecondary education, high school vocational education offers invaluable opportunities to develop skills, explore careers, and learn how to get along on a job. Often employment prior to graduation is an excellent predictor of later vocational success. To be successful, vocational educators, who have little or no experience with students with LD, need to consult with special education teachers. Too often their classes focus on seatwork, large group instruction, lectures, textbooks, and workbooks, measures that have already failed with this student population.

In addition to vocational adjustment, students with LD need help with independent living, leisure time activities, and social adjustment. The IEP's transition plan is designed to assist in this process.

Other Specialists

School audiologists evaluate whether hearing or auditory processing problems are affecting students with LD and intervene accordingly. The occupational therapist, physical therapist, and adaptive physical education teacher can assist students with persistent coordination and self-help difficulties. Social workers address family issues that affect learning, and rehabilitation counselors can help students make the transition to work and independent living. School guidance counselors and administrators not only establish the organizational framework for service delivery but also provide important personal support to students and teachers.
