Arwen Abendstern As the days warm, a variety of new birds will be seen around your neighborhood. Children can learn about these new breeds as they create a spring bird portfolio.
Supplies:
A digital camera
An empty notebook or scrapbook
A bird field guide (available at your local library)
Clear glue
Activity:
- Create a page for 4 or 5 of the birds commonly observed around your home.
- Write the common name of the bird at the top of the page in large letters.
- Look up the scientific name of the bird in the field guide and write that below the common name in parentheses.
- Take pictures of the chosen varieties of birds.
- Paste them into the notebook or scrapbook on the appropriate pages.
- Hunt for feathers left behind by the birds. (Be sure to wash your hands after handling the feathers!)
- Paste the feathers onto the appropriate pages of the notebook as well.
- Using the field guide, look up each bird’s favorite food.
- Sketch a picture of each bird’s favorite food onto the appropriate page.
- Continue adding to the album through the spring months.
