Is your child being bullied? Read on for the danger signs you should look for.
What You Need to Know
Bulllying can take many forms--physical, verbal, or emotional (intimidating or excluding the child), as well as cyberbullying via the internet. Many kids who are being bullied feel ashamed to tell, especially boys and older kids. Parents should watch for these danger signs in their child:
- is afraid of going to school, riding the bus, or walking home from school
- has unexplained bruises or injuries
- is depressed or moody when returns from school
- suddenly begins doing poorly at school
- has a change in sleep or eating habits, frequent headaches, or nightmares
How You Can Help
If you suspect your child is being bullied, get to the bottom of it. Talk with your child about your concerns, asking subtle questions about changes you've noticed, or by coming right out and asking directly if any kids at school are picking on them.
Set up a meeting with your child's teacher. Ask questions about how your child fits in at school, and share your concern that they may be getting bullied.
