Telling Tales Is Good. Five tips for parents helping first graders to write.

What You Need To Know

Writing is fun for first graders. Journals can build a sense of who they are, as well as recording what they’ve done. Grocery lists and thank you notes help them learn to form letters and words. Parents of first graders can do plenty to assist, and enable their children to express themselves clearly with pencil and paper.

Here are some of the developmental stages for first graders:

  • Revision. Your child can add to existing writing, including an illustration or correcting errors.
  • Spelling. Look for a combination of ‘invented’ spellings and correctly spelled words.
  • Variety. First graders will write lots of different things, from lists of best friends to stories.
  • Story language. Exposure to stories teaches children narrative language, such as ‘once upon a time’ or ‘they all lived happily ever after.’
