Acad for Academics & Arts School Reviews

By a Parent on

This school has some really great attributes, such as art, music, strings, and dance on a weekly basis for elementary students.  As a middle school student, you are allowed to choose to attend dance classes instead of P. E. (the dance program is fantastic).  You can also choose to take choir, strings, and art, which is taught daily.  Now, to the nitty gritty:  the behavior problems are rampant.  There is much cursing, hitting, rule-breaking and general nastiness and bad behavior in the elementary level.  It seems as if the students who are consistently misbehaving are given a free pass and the teachers give up due to lack of parental support and chalk up the bad behavior to the kids "expressing themselves."  Meanwhile, the handful of students who are trying to learn, pay attention, do their work, and are not behavior problems are left to rot.  They seem to be the minority.  The rules don't apply to every student equally.

Bullying is also a huge, huge problem at this school in both elementary and middle school levels.  The guidance counselor  is no help whatsoever.  Instead of addressing the bully who is verbally and physically threatening other students, she coddles the bully and tells the victims that they need to come up with their own way to handle the situation, even if the situation has been occurring for over a year and is progressively getting worse. Ultimately, she doesn't perform the job she is being paid to do. The guidance counselor is the principal's good friend.

This school is a magnet school and the students who are continuously behaviour problems and who are disruptive and are not taking advantage of the arts should be kicked out and made to go to the school in their school zone.  There are too many students who are on the waiting list who really want to attend AAA for the benefits of the school and who would be assets to the school who should be enrolled there instead.
