Highland Technical High School Reviews

By a Former Student on

This school is horrible. I know many other students who agree! It should be shut down. Really. Ms. Hilger and Ms.Blackmen do NOT treat us all fairly, but try to look good in front of parents. It's hard to actually have proof to show. Some students get away with breaking the overdone dress code, while other students do not! And I know the principal noticed. In advisory, for some weird assignment we had to discuss are eating habits, and when my healthy friend wrote down she hadn't eaten breakfast just that morning, they sent her to the principals office and tried to punish her! I am outraged. Another time, Ms.Jan at the front desk decided to try and tell her mom that her daughter was not allowed to leave school. Her mom came in to get her for something and Ms.Jan was refusing. That's also an outrage! Ms. Blackmen may of just had some random hate towards me and my friend especially, though because she would get mad at us for no reason. Many times during lunch, despite the fact that we were no slower at leaving than any other student, she would yell at us and say she'd better not see us be the last ones in the commons (lunch room). In addition, this is a poor quality school academically and socially as well as for the environment. Academically the system hurts you more often than it helps you and puts students behind, the school supplies are limited and sometimes donated so you essentially get worn things, the space of the school is tiny. We don't have a real lunch room or any gym equipment, the furniture is aweful. As for socially, the small school setting does not prepare you for the real world. You need to be surrounded my trouble and fights and sometimes bullying. That may sound  crazy, but in our world it will always happen. I am a good student, but being around bad things makes you a better stronger person who can handle more situations at ease. This school mixes 6th graders with 12th graders and it is really annoying because we are all treated the same. I went to a normal highschool before transfering to Highland. At my previous school you were able to go off campus, but Highland didn't allow it until you do PSS standards. PSS for highschool transfers is nonsense. You prove things like knowing how to "make art" or how to speak to an adult. Those are things a 6th grader learns and something you just expect with a 12th grader! Again, this school needs to be shut down. I could give a list that never ends!!! It really makes me upset that they get away with this. When I was interviewed to go to this school, they didn't describe the school how it really is in anyway. And they set up the school to look better than it does on any other day. It's like false information and perception.

I have trouble understanding the grading system. I never know when my child is doing good or not so good. Communication with the the school staff is irritating at best. I do not recommend HTH to any parent who wishes to keep up with your child's progress.
