Jen Kotkin: My children's school does a great job making sure everyone is included in community events such as pancake breakfasts, philanthropy projects, and fundraisers. The principal is always friendly and down to earth and manages to keep a consistent group of corre teachers that excel at motivating students.

What is it?
The TerraNova is a series of nationally norm-referenced tests that assess general academic knowledge in core subjects, as well as providing national comparisons.

Students in grades 2 through 9 are assessed in reading, language arts and math.

Students receive a percentile rank, which indicates how well they performed in comparison to their peers in other states. The goal is for all students to score at or above the national average, or 50th percentile, on the test.

Arizona's Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) are annual tests used to measure a student's mastery of the state's grade-level academic standards.
